Sheepish Smile

Sheep, originally uploaded by Em Dy.

I wonder why a smile is called sheepish. Do you know why?

That's a cool shot.

It's a great question. I want to know the answer to this one too. :)

Nice take on the theme. You smile sheepishly when you're embarrassed which resembles a sheep's meekness and timidity - I guess that's it, lol. Here's mine http://www.mirasblog.com/2009/01/photo-hunt-5-furry.html

I have no idea about why it is called a sheepish smile, though Mira's explanation makes sense. I like your critters photo....

Mira seems to be right with her answer according to most dictionaries I consulted:

Hmm, sheeps and timid, I don't know.

I like that photo ... very cool :-)

Many, many years ago at school, I recall being asked by the teacher to look up the definition and origin of sheepiness.

IIRC ... the term has been around for quite awhile. It can been being like a group of sheep ...timid and bashful.

Or, it can refer to the type of smile someone gives when making a mistake or being caught doing something they really shouldn't be doing. Sort of embarrassed but 'oh well' type thing..

Good shot, Em Dy, and you got two-for-one with this one: Camera Critters and Photo Hunt (Furry). Well done!

what a beautifully composed scene!!

I assume sheepish smile came to be because of how small their smiles are -

Great photo! And those things are furry! Sheepish maybe means shy or something like that, I think.

I did Photo Hunters too. I hope you get a chance to visit!

Oh! I love sheep!!

Not the 'whitest' sheep but the most appropriate for the theme. Sheepish smile-true I think it comes with being timid...:D
